    Improving financial capability: the mediating role of financial behaviour

    This paper investigates the collective impact of financial literacy and inclusion on individuals’ financial capability focusing on the mediating role of financial behaviour. The research is conducted on an individual-level survey. The relationships were examined by using PLS-SEM. Financial capability can be improved by increasing individuals’ financial knowledge, financial behaviour and promoting their inclusion in financial services. Furthermore, the indirect effect of financial knowledge and attitude on financial capability is found to be significant, highlighting the importance of financial behaviour. The results assist policymakers and industry leaders in understanding the most influential factors on financial capability in the context of a post-communist transition country. This enables them to design policies and services aimed at equipping citizens with knowledge and skills to make best use of their financial resources. © 2020 The Author(s).     mTOR independent regulation of macroautophagy by Leucine Rich Repeat Kinase 2 via Beclin-1

    Leucine rich repeat kinase 2 is a complex enzyme with both kinase and GTPase activities, closely linked to the pathogenesis of several human disorders including Parkinson’s disease, Crohn’s disease, leprosy and cancer. LRRK2 has been implicated in numerous cellular processes; however its physiological function remains unclear. Recent reports suggest that LRRK2 can act to regulate the cellular catabolic process of macroautophagy, although the precise mechanism whereby this occurs has not been identi ed. To investigate the signalling events through which LRRK2 acts to in uence macroautophagy, the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/Unc-51-like kinase 1 (ULK1) and Beclin-1/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathways were evaluated in astrocytic cell models in the presence and absence of LRRK2 kinase inhibitors. Chemical inhibition of LRRK2 kinase activity resulted in the stimulation of macroautophagy in a non-canonical fashion, independent of mTOR and ULK1, but dependent upon the activation of Beclin 1-containing class III PI3-kinase

    Looking inside the spiky bits : a critical review and conceptualisation of entrepreneurial ecosystems

    The authors wish to thank the Organisational for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for funding their original research on entrepreneurial ecosystems.The concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems has quickly established itself as one of the latest ‘fads’ in entrepreneurship research. At face value, this kind of systemic approach to entrepreneurship offers a new and distinctive path for scholars and policy makers to help understand and foster growth-oriented entrepreneurship. However, its lack of specification and conceptual limitations has undoubtedly hindered our understanding of these complex organisms. Indeed, the rapid adoption of the concept has tended to overlook the heterogeneous nature of ecosystems. This paper provides a critical review and conceptualisation of the ecosystems concept: it unpacks the dynamics of the concept; outlines its theoretical limitations; measurement approaches and use in policy-making. It sets out a preliminary taxonomy of different archetypal ecosystems. The paper concludes that entrepreneurial ecosystems are a highly variegated, multi-actor and multi-scalar phenomenon, requiring bespoke policy interventions.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Comparison of Human Primary with Human iPS Cell-Derived Dopaminergic Neuron Grafts in the Rat Model for Parkinson's Disease

    Neuronal degeneration within the substantia nigra and the loss of the dopaminergic nigro-striatal pathway are the major hallmarks of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Grafts of foetal ventral mesencephalic (VM) dopaminergic (DA) neurons into the striatum have been shown to be able to restore striatal dopamine levels and to improve overall PD symptoms. However, human foetus-derived cell grafts are not feasible for clinical application. Autologous induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS cell)-derived DA neurons are emerging as an unprecedented alternative. In this review, we summarize and compare the efficacy of human iPS cell-derived DA neuron grafts to restore normal behaviour in a rat model for PD with that of human foetal primary DA neurons. The differences we observed in the efficacy to restore normal function between the 2 types of DA neuron grafts could be ascribed to intrinsic properties of the iPS cell-derived DA neurons that critically affected survival and proper neurite extension in the striatum after implantation

    A Geologic and Gravity Survey of the Belle Plaine Area, Minnesota

    Combined geologic and gravity investigations in the vicinity of Belle Plaine, in the Minnesota River valley, have disclosed a hitherto unknown fault of possible major significance. The fault is inferred on the basis of available evidence to have a left lateral displacement of the order of 100 miles and later vertical movements of about 1,000 feet. The field work was supported by the Minnesota Geological Survey. The writers wish to express their great appreciation to the late Dr. Edward Thiel of the Department of Geophysics and to Dr. J. C. Craddock and Barton Gross of the Department of Geology, University of Minnesota for giving permission to use their unpublished gravity data in the area. We also wish to thank the Chicago and North Western Railroad for providing their right of way maps and elevation profiles; these aided greatly in the gravity data reduction. The geologic work on which this report is based was done by the senior writer in 1961 and 1962, as part of the compilation of a revised geologic map of the southeastern part of the state. This work indicated the probable presence of a fault near Belle Plaine. Because of the sparse exposures in this part of the state and the small amount of available subsurface geologic data, the area of structural discontinuity was investigated in the spring of 1962 by detailed gravity measurements. These data, obtained by the junior author, substantiated the geologic interpretation and further elucidated the structure and stratigraphy of the area. Gravity data and station locations are on file in the office of the Minnesota Geological Survey
